Sagada

Municipality in the Philippines
Sagada is a town in the Cordillera Mountains, within the Philippines’ Mountain Province. Echo Valley’s hanging coffins are displayed high on cliffs, while centuries-old coffins are stacked in burial sites like Lumiang Cave. The nearby Sumaguing Cave has unusual limestone formations. To the north, Bomod-ok Falls has a natural swimming pool. Rice terraces are carved into the area’s surrounding mountainsides.

THINGS TO DO:

Sumaguing Cave

Sumaguing cave is a cave system near the town of Sagada. It’s a tourist friendly place but is not an easy walking cave system as you’ll need to use all four limbs to climb up and down the slippery limestone formations. Inside, it’s pitch black so you’ll need to rent a kerosene lamp. There’s pools of clear water inside but they’re too shallow to swim in.

Hanging Coffins of Sagada

The hanging coffins of Sagada is a sacred area in Echo Valley. It’s actually located in Sagada town and is just a quick walk down a set of stairs. Once there, you’ll see wooden coffins stuck by the side of the mountains. The igorot dead are smoked on a chair before they are folded into a fetal position and placed inside the small coffins.

Pongas Falls

A good one hour trek from the parking lot of Ankileng Village passing thru beautiful Rice Terraces, hanging bridges, irrigation canals and slippery cliffs. The hike to the Pongas Falls is more difficult compared to that of Bomod-ok Falls. The falls is multi-layered and you need to climb if you want to get to the most beautiful and deep level. The water is icy cold and so rewarding after that long trek.
WHEN TO VISIT
Peak travel is during Sagada’s drier months (Dec–May). There is significant rainfall Jun–Sep. The climate is generally moderate year-round, with warm days and cooler nights. Various Begnas (thanksgiving) rituals surround the rice harvest. These include Begnas di Yabyab (Oct/Nov), honoring the rice seedlings, and Begnas di Latab (Jun), which coincides with the end of the summer wedding season.
