El Nido, Palawan

Municipality in the Philippines
El Nido is a Philippine municipality on Palawan island. It’s known for white-sand beaches, coral reefs and as the gateway to the Bacuit archipelago, a group of islands with steep karst cliffs. Miniloc Island is famed for the clear waters of its Small and Big lagoons. Nearby Shimizu Island has fish-filled waters. The area has many dive sites, including Dilumacad Island’s long tunnel leading to an underwater cavern.
The laid-back town of El Nido is a base for island-hopping tours, and kayaking trips to mountainous Cadlao Island, just across the bay. Taraw Peak can be reached by climbing steep, jagged cliffs for a bird’s-eye view of El Nido town and its horseshoe-shaped cove. North of town, the twin beaches of Nacpan and Calitang curve in opposite directions, featuring white sand and tall coconut palms. The cold waters of Nagkalit-kalit Falls are a popular swimming spot.

THINGS TO DO:

 Nacpan Beach

Very beautiful beach. 200 pesos per chair. Very sandy and relaxing. Not as crowded as the main beaches around here. Good dining options if you get hungry. Very picturesque. You can also do some kayaking and snorkeling for a rental fee. Overall, a great beach.

 Big Lagoon

The Big Lagoon is definitely as its name suggests – Big! When the tide is out, it may be fun to grab a kayak and also have shoes. I didn’t have shoes and while it was bearable, you can still cut your feet or be a little uncomfortable. It is a great location for a little photo shoot!

 Miniloc Island

El Nido Resorts’ Eco-Discovery island resort, Miniloc, offers guests with a back-to-basics Filipino coastal village vibe with rustic or native design. In Miniloc, guests can swim with the 1.5-meter jack fish and get up close and personal with a variety of marine species just at its house reef. Miniloc Island is also a gateway to discover and explore the popular attractions around Bacuit Bay, such as the Big and Small Lagoons and Snake Island.

 Secret Lagoon

We thought the Secret Beach of Matinloc Island (Tour C) was the only concealed beach that we were gonna set foot on in this trip. But Miniloc Island has a secret, too. After exploring the Big and Small Lagoons, and having lunch at Payong-Payong Beach, Tour A continued and led us to a paradise made of limestone. It was a surreal experience approaching this hard, spiky karst world. It was like we entered another world — a world where “ugly” is either banned or non-existent.
WHEN TO VISIT
Most travelers visit during the dry season, from Jan–May. The tropical climate is hot and humid year-round, with a rainy season Jun–Nov. Important holidays include Easter and Holy Week (Mar/Apr, dates vary), with parades and street markets, and Christmas (Dec).
